Top 5: Mermaid images that inspire me

So, it's been ages since I did a top 5, but I thought I'd throw out a quick one before I go on holidays to Saigon and Mui Ne A mermaid inspired post. Mermaids seem to be everywhere these days, and also, in my mind.

So, here are my top 5 recent mermaid pic loves:

 5- Ulysses and the Sirens by Herbert James Draper

So, in fact these are sirens, not mermaids and from the Odyssey but this picture still rocks! I love the siren swinging from the rope and the oarsmen staring at the dark haired siren at the front. And Ulysses looking like he is in pure agony listening to their beautiful songs but not being able to dive into the sea to be with them.

 

4-  Selkie Blues by Andrea Sgorbissa

Okay, so this isn't a mermaid either, she's a Selkie, but it's almost the same thing! I love the way she is clutching her seal coat and staring into the ocean, perhaps trying to decide whether to stay with her landsman or go back to her selkie husband? The expression on the seals face is great too. Wise, and knowing! More about Selkies here and here if you are interested and check out Andrea's mythological artwork! It's great!

 

3-But a mermaid has no tears, and therefore she suffers so much more by Marie Zucker

I love this lady's photography skills and spend so long on her website staring at the jaw-droppingly beautiful images she creates, not just in this series of photos but in all of her photos. Love. This photo resonates with me for a couple of reasons. I like the far away look on the mermaids face and the fact it doesn't look warm in these photos, which for some reason, makes it look more realistic.

2- Vintage mermaid photo from Weeki Wachee Springs.

I love this picture, the mermaid's cute little vintage swim suit and the way she is kissing the seal. I love her other hand tilted out making her look so elegant and graceful, and I even like the tacky castle in the background.

1- Movie Still from Hook

Yep. My fav mermaid image is these mermaids from Hook seducing and trying to drown Robin Williams.

I used to watch this movie a lot as a kid, and this part was always one of my favorite bits, I used to daydream about being the red mermaid, cos I thought she was the prettiest. Really though, I like this image the best, it sums up the way mermaids are meant to function; beautifully, seductively and evilly.
